When We First Met
When we first heard about Aurora, we’d known Chris Urmson for a decade via relationships at Google and then from an enlightening presentation he’d given us on autonomous vehicles in 2016. Now working on Aurora, Chris, along with his co-founders Drew and Sterling, impressed us not only with their backgrounds as leaders of Waymo, Uber, and Tesla, respectively, but with their intelligence, dedication to mission, and humility. Their vision enthralled us, and after six months of learning more about Aurora over breakfast meetings, we were humbled by an invite to visit their Pittsburgh office—a gorgeous, open plan, garage-heavy building where not a single person ate at their desk but instead came together in the cafeteria. Days later, we took an inaugural ride in one of Aurora’s self-driving vehicles, and partnered with them on the Series B.
